Resolving to Live Each Joyfully Imperfect Day

We should be choosing what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.
— Marie Kondo

It’s that time again…and even if you don’t make actual resolutions; it’s tempting to see the beginning of the New Year as a time to take stock of the past, re-affirm goals, and to set some new intentions.

For the most part, it seems that New Year’s resolutions focus on eradicating habits that are unhealthy: we focus on becoming stricter with ourselves in regards to our diet, exercise, online habits or spending. Or, we set a determined resolution to clear out the closets once and for all.

While living a healthier and more organized life is certainly a good and positive thing, maybe emphasizing how we have, up until now, fallen short of our ideals is not the best way to Spark Joy in the New Year.

In KonMari, our journey begins with reflecting upon living our best life and what qualities we want to bring toward us. While KonMari tidying and editing, we give attention to what we are keeping instead of what we are leaving behind.

And, remember, even as we leave behind those things that are no longer working for us, we appreciate how each of those things have taught us something about who we are becoming today.

I’ll invite you to join me this year in appreciating and building upon all the behaviors, habits and activities that are part of your joyful life instead of focusing on what you should or shouldn’t be doing.

-Add one more tasty and thoughtful meal to your week instead of denying yourself ice cream for dessert.

-Wear your favorite workout gear to the gym every time you go, even if you only get there once a week, instead of feeling discouraged that you don’t go everyday.

-Enjoy your online social media time fully and without hesitation instead of beating yourself up for not reading your new book.

You may just find that ice cream becomes less interesting, going to the gym becomes a more frequent and festive occasion, and you reach your fill of Instagram sooner when you acknowledge what is truly Sparking Joy for the person you are today.

Allow yourself to be who you are right now, at this very moment, and embrace each one of your joyfully imperfect days.

Happy New Year!
